Glenneyre Blaze
A 10 p.m. Friday night blaze at 2101 Glenneyre did considerable damage to two condominiums and led to the evacuation of three other nearby residences. No one was injured. Battalion Chief Tom Christopher, the fire department's duty officer that night, said the cause of the fire hadn't been determined. Full Story
Bluebelt Coalition Sets Sights on Increased Coastal Protection
Local ocean conservationists sealed their pact Monday to cooperate in an effort to increase coastal marine reserves and protected areas in Laguna Beach. The goal is to nominate a local spokesperson for an impending review by state fish and game officials of the Marine Life Protection Act for Southern California. Full Story
SCMC To Close Maternity Center Eyeing Boomer Gain
After about 30,000 total births, with nearly a thousand babies born yearly, 98 fewer births from 2005 to 2007 contributed to a shutdown of the thirteen-bed Maternity Center at South Coast Medical Center. The Maternity Center loses nearly $1 million per year according to SCMC. Full Story

Cops Nab Suspect with OnStar Help
At 1:15 Monday morning, police received 9-1-1 calls about a hit and run crash at Third and Mermaid. Police said a witness said a SUV had been going too fast trying to make the turn at the intersection and hit a garage and posts leaving a piece of its grill before taking off. The witness was unable to get the license plate number but told police it was an Infinity. Full Story

Editor: Laguna Beach has an ordinance banning the use of Leaf Blowers because of their noise and the air pollution resulting from their dust. My gardener is the only one on our block who obeys this law. The finefor a violation is hefty and it gets progressively more expensive with repeated violations. Full Story

Breakers Spring Sports Update
Boys Tennis (6-5- 3-0) The Breakers swept all nine doubles matches to surprise defending OC League champs Estancia April 3 on the loser's courts. The domination was clear - the closest scores were 6-2 victories by doubles teams Ben Biscarrat/Jared Berkson and Noah Michelon/Mickey Rubel. Full Story

The 2007-08 Laguna Beach High School Girls Varsity Soccer team was recently honored with outstanding All-Orange Coast League awards. Leading the honor list was Laura Renault who was announced as the OCL Co-MVP and Claire Rubel as OCL Defensive Co-MVP. Full Story

The Laguna Beach 6-12 year old Swim Team, also known as the Laguna Bees, coached by Bee Eschenwald and Sarah Mitchell, recently participated in their most competitive meet of the season on Sunday, March 30, at Villa Park High School. 23 OC teams swam in the meet. Full Story
