Local Teen Heads to U.S. Capital
Laguna Beach teen Jordan Tygh was selected to attend the 2008 Congressional Student Leadership Conference on intelligence and national security this summer in Washington D.C. Tygh will attend the June conference sponsored by Lead America. The 10-day conference allows students get an inside look at homeland security and intelligence organizations. Full Story
Shawn Merz Named Volleyball MVP
Senior outside hitter Shawn Merz captured the top honors as LBHS boys volleyball concluded its 37th season with the annual awards dinner held last Monday evening. The senior star was nearly unstoppable this season with his thunder kills that frustrated every 2008 opponent. Full Story
Paddle Guide Offers Kayak Rental
La Vida Laguna, which has offered two-hour, $75 per person kayak tours in north Laguna, will start renting kayaks hourly, providing lessons and tours from a second location at Treasure Island, on weekends until June 22. After that and through Labor Day, kayaks will be available daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., renting for $20 an hour, $30 for a tandem. Full Story
First practice, May 31 Race Begins for New Track Club
The nascent Laguna Beach Track Club is now accepting registrations from kids aged eight to 18, regardless of experience, with the first practice to be held Saturday, May 31. Leading the fledgling club is Mark Harris, a former coach on the LBHS track team, who received a lot of support for the endeavor from the athletes he coached and their parents. Full Story
Two Bees Qualify for Jr. Olympics
Last week, two swimmers from the two year old Laguna Bees swim club, Liam Shapley, age 9, and Natalie Selin, age 10, qualified for the Junior Olympics. Both Shapley and Selin qualified in the 100-meter butterfly. Full Story
Majors Playoffs Hobie Survives Early Loss to Play on Fiesta Night
Team Hobie's championship hopes appeared dim after losing in the opening round of the double elimination LB Little League Majors Division playoffs at Riddle Field. Those hopes are brighter after Hobie won games on consecutive nights to earn a chance for the playoff crown tonight against American Legion at 6:45. Full Story
