The Laguna Beach chapter of National Assistance League installed new board members on May 12. Dr. Tom Bent, medical director and chief operating officer of the Laguna Beach Community Clinic, was installed as president elect of the California Academy of Family Physicians. Joan Halvajian of Laguna Beach and Ed Halvajian of Newport Beach announce the marriage of their daughter, Andrea, to Will Martin, son of Dr. Edith Martin of Jackson, Wyo. and Dr. Sam Martin of Cape Cod, Mass. Boys and Girls Club Supporters Supply a Sky Full of Stars
On May 9, over 360 attendees supported the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach at its eighth annual "Art of Giving Gala" hosted at the Montage Resort and Spa. The evening netted nearly $200,000, which will go towards maintaining enrichment programs for young people in the community. Full Story

Hospital Takes Swing at Fundraising
South Coast Medical Center will host its 2008 golf tournament, "Take a Swing at Cancer" on Jun. 2. Opportunities are still available for teams and individual players to sign up and play in this fundraiser. Individuals play for $250 and teams play for $1,000. The format will be four-man scramble, in which everyone must use three tee shots. Full Story

Laguna Beach television viewers in April who tuned in the Fox Television game show "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" saw police department Sgt. Jason Kravetz announce, "I am not as smart as a fifth grader." Of course, he was all smiles anyway, knowing that had had been smart enough to win $175,000 before blowing a question. Full Story

Pet Shelter Receives Disaster Preparedness Grant
Laguna Beach Animal Shelter received a $4,000 disaster preparedness grant from Petfinder.com Foundation, and plans to use the funds to install a backup electrical generator in case of a power outage.
