Larger Lifeguard HQ Inches Forward
Square footage of the proposed new lifeguard headquarters at north Main Beach went up, went down, and then went back up during Tuesday's City Council meeting. It might possibly get bigger still. The existing 1,850 square foot headquarters at the north end of the sand has long been overcrowded, serving as a home base for nearly 100 guards at peak summer season. Full Story
City Buys Day Labor Parcel from Caltrans
After enduring another round of withering criticism by antiillegal immigration opponents, the City Council on Tuesday voted 5-0 to pay Caltrans $18,000 for land alongside Laguna Canyon Road that for years has served as a day labor hiring center. Full Story

Back in the mid '80s when Marianna Hof was first hired as the adult librarian in Laguna Beach, she and the library made the simultaneous transition to a computerized reference system. Judge Favors Art Fest in Suit by Exhibitor
A Superior Court judge ruled in favor of the Sawdust Art Festival in a lawsuit brought by Laguna Beach photographer Jim Steins over his ouster in 2006. Superior Court Judge Franz E. Miller ruled Thursday that Steins has no contractual right to be including in the annual summer art show, undercutting Steins' legal fight for reinstatement. Full Story
New Bank Set to Open as Another Locks the Vault
Small business lender South County Bank will close its five year old Laguna Beach branch effective Aug. 31, bank officials told account holders in a letter dated May 28. The same night the letter was issued, the city's Planning Commission approved a new conditional use permit for a Union Bank branch, set to occupy a vacant Broadway storefront. Full Story
