Community's Legacy Yields a Windfall for 2008 Graduates
The Laguna Beach High School honors convocation last Wednesday granted awards totaling $226,363 to 112 graduating seniors, a record 247 individual grants from 109 scholarships. The program's humble beginnings began when the Ebell Club of Laguna honored graduates of the class of 1938, Laguna's fourth graduating class. Full Story
Surfabout Finally Crashes to Completion
After three weeks of delay due due to poor surf conditions, the seventh annual Spring Fever Surfabout kicked off at Thalia Local News Street beach on June 6 beginning at 7:30 a.m. With consistent waves throughout the day, none of the 60 participants could have wished for better conditions, though the turnout was small because of the unexpected swell. Merz named to All-CIF Team
LBHS senior outside hitter Shawn Merz was selected to the 28-player Division-II All-CIF boys volleyball team, capping a senior season that saw him as an almost unstoppable force in high school volleyball. USC bound Fab-50 player Clay Knapp was a repeat second team selection. Full Story
Mr. LBHS Boys Throng the Catwalk to Claim School Title
The LBHS Make-a-Wish club's fundraiser last Thursday skipped the typical bake sale and silent auction. Instead, 10 boys of various talents participated in a beefcake pageant to claim the title of Mr. LBHS, where they danced, performed, paraded in swimsuits and eveningwear, and answered questions in a quick-firechallenge. Spanish Approved for More Elementary Classes In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the school board approved the addition of 60 minutes of Spanish instruction weekly for all fourthand fifth-graders enrolled at El Morro and Top of the World elementary schools this fall. Full Story

Well-Deserved Recognition
School board member and 14-year former Top of the World volunteer Ketta Brown received the 2008 Golden Oak Service Award, California PTA's most prestigious, in recognition of her contributions to the school community. Masson, Hutchinson Named Athletes of the Year
Swimmer and water polo player Pierre Masson and volleball player Dana Hutchinson were selected Laguna Beach High School's outstanding boys and girls athletes of the year. Grad Goes for Rocket Science
Laguna Beach High School graduating senior Evan B. Layman has been accepted to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz., which specializes in aviation and aerospace. Layman, the son of Susan E. Layman, will be studying aerospace engineering when he attends the university this fall. Full Story

Top of the World fifth-grader Brighid Burnes, 11, took first place in the softball throw at the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation Track and Field competition on June 7. She threw 132.5 feet, best in the state for her age group. Full Story
High School & Youth Football Camps
LBHS football coach Jonathan Todd and staff will conduct summer football camps on the high school grounds for both high school and youths from the third through eight grades. Incoming freshmen and upper class camp will run from June 23 until Aug 8. Sessions are Monday through Friday from 2:30-5:30 p.m. $341 per player. Full Story

Despite the current economic downturn, the mood at Claes Restaurant was festive as SchoolPower trustees held their final meeting of the year and closed the books on a record breaking fundraising year, netting over $660,000 for local public schools. Full Story
