Plaudits for SCMC ER
Editor: After a couple recent visits to South Coast Hospital Emergency Room, I cannot give enough plaudits to the staff and management including the caring doctors and nurses. Laguna needs this hospital and all of us who live in Laguna should give our full support and encourage the continued operation of this "gem". Full Story
Child safety: nothing was or is more important
Editor: Some 35 plus years ago I was with my son in Bluebird Park and he was fascinated by the leaky water fountain right by the entrance to the park. At the time mud was one of his interests. I was very concerned that he could dart out into Bluebird Canyon Drive at any time. The park at this time did not have a fence that was child proof. Full Story
How some 50s era LBHS seniors gained respect for the fuzz
Ed. Note: This letter was sent to Dale Ghere re: his guest column in last week's paper. No one knows better than you what a harmful weapon water balloons can be. And, the real danger is that people perceive of them as harmless. Full Story
Indy Article "another polluted runoff outfall pipe"?
Editor: Bill Hagle's article [6/27] in The Independent about the finding of steelhead trout was not only inaccurate but he makes the assumption that readers will automatically side with Dunbar's misguided POV. Full Story
"…facts, not fishy stories that insult our intelligence."
Editor: I do not like to criticize someone who is trying to clean up our creeks and beaches, however, when unsubstantiated fish stories and fish observations are used to stop the water district from reclaiming much needed water, I have to say something. Full Story

Is it really gone forever? Why?
Editor: My husband and I were walking down PCH near Ralphs on Saturday when I happened to look across the street and became completely puzzled. Wait. What happened to Eiler's Inn? Was I dreaming? What's that characterless, soulless plaster box doing there in its place? A friend happened to walk by at that exact moment, and we shared the same astonishment. Full Story
No longer fuzzy
Editor: I'm prompted to write this letter by a column in The Village News [Village Laguna monthly newsletter] written by Arnold Hano. In the June edition he runs through a number of proposals the Athens Group has made to push through their plans to build their hotel complex in Aliso Canyon. Full Story
Rejecting Arnold
Editor: Mr. Hano wrote nearly 600 words [6/27] that were narrow, crass, and demeaning regarding the Athens group and the Aliso Creek development. Then he rejects all his words and says he chooses the vast, rich, and rewarding option. Full Story
Is thinking not always a good thing?
Editor: "Niko Theris always gets me thinking, which is a good thing." So writes Al Enderle in his letter "Thinking is a good thing" [6/27]. I, Niko Theris, am happy for Al. Too bad his thinking isn't less self-centered and myopic. Full Story
Dying for a democratic Iraq and world peace
Editor: It is of course terrible when a member of the United States armed forces dies. We all grieve the loss of 4,113 US soldiers in Iraq. If their efforts lead to a democracy in an Arab country, it will very much be in the strategic interest of the United States. A democratic Iraq could transform the Middle East and be very important for world peace. Full Story
