Feds law re: lasers and aircraft is absurd
Editor: I am a retired scientist who has worked with lasers since they were invented by a college classmate, Gordon Gould, in 1958. It is hilarious to read about the paranoia pilots have when a harmless laser beam is aimed in their direction. Even though it is harmless, the FAA had a law passed making it illegal to point any laser pointer at an aircraft. Full Story
Illinois Ire
Editor: I was shocked by the poor writing and mistakes made in the article, Three Grads Set Off on the Road Less Taken, which appeared in the June 27 issue. Full Story
"Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die."
Editor: Ann Christophís column titled ìLess is a Crisisî was thoughtful and raised interesting points. Cottages hiding in Laguna Canyon
Editor: As one heads out of town on Laguna Canyon Road there are the three cottages neatly fenced in and trees are growing over it "hiding" another $200,000 mistake from taxpayers. Perhaps the cottages could be used for "affordable housing". Full Story
PD did well with traffic management
Editor: Kudos to our Police Department for their outstanding planning and execution of traffic management over this past holiday weekend. Despite the nearly overwhelming volume of traffic (particularly following the fireworks on Friday night and both before and after the Festival of Arts preview on Saturday night), our police executed a traffic management plan. Bren Center - July 25
Editor: "They're back!" Like those dreaded ghouls in the movie Poltergeist, the TCA plan to put a toll road through San Onofre State Park and ruin Trestles should be dead and buried since the historic Coastal Commission 8-2 vote denying their request in February. Full Story
July 25: time to show the feds and TCA what no means
Editor: The folks at the Transportation Corridor Agencies do not seem to understand that the people of Southern California do not want or need a toll road that would compromise San Onofre State Beach, and Trestles surf break. Full Story
Steelhead homework
Editor: The letter of rebuke and demand for facts from Joe Jahraus isn't unexpected. [… facts, not fishy stories…7/4]. Just because JJ's sample group didn't see steelhead doesn't mean that they weren't there. Maybe it's because they weren't looking for them. Full Story

If "Satan uses every trick of the trade", is he in the oil biz?
Editor: Niko Theris wrote: "Al, what worked two thousand years ago may not necessarily work today." I suggest that there is, at the very least, one exception: Jesus Christ said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me." If that was true when Jesus said it, can we agree that it is still true today? Full Story
Proselytizing
Editor: While walking around town last week, I was approached by a man who, although he may have agreed with what I write in my letters to the editor, offered that I am proselytizing the same way that Bible thumpers do. His point was well taken and that led me to ponder what alternatives there might be. Full Story
