Garden Lover Hortense Miller Dies
Hortense Miller, the founder of the Hortense Miller Garden in Laguna Beach, died peacefully on July 28, a month shy of her 100th birthday. She was known and loved for her keen sense of humor, her wide-ranging knowledge of plants and animals, and especially for her generosity in giving her garden to the town where she lived since 1953. Plastic Bags' Shelf Life Growing Short
The city's environmental committee on Monday discussed drafting a recommendation to the City Council for a plastic bag ban in Laguna Beach, similar to bans being enacted in Malibu, Santa Monica and most recently Los Angeles. Full Story

Regulated kayaking would mean a healthy recreational activity

U.S. Open Postscript
The 15th annual U.S. Surfing Open ended Sunday, attracting over 400,000 people to Huntington Beach over its 10-day duration. The swell throughout the week mostly came from the south but had some northwest winds to cross things up, which made the waves more peaky. Full Story
