Resource Center Nears New Home
City Council this week temporarily postponed considering providing a $100,000 loan to Laguna Relief and Resource Center, which hopes to secure a new location though it lacks full financing to close the deal. According to board chair Ed Sauls, a benefactor has offered a down payment and a fundraiser concert is planned for Sept. 27. The center aids disaster victims, low-income families and the local homeless population. Full Story

With a 4-1 vote Tuesday, elected officials blotted out the dream of Art Guevara to open True Fate Skin Art and Gallery at 1936 S. Coast Highway, following a six month battle. From the first day of filling out paperwork, Guevara, of Costa Mesa, felt misunderstood and wrongly associated with a grimy stereotype of some tattoo artists. Full Story
Bequest to Fund Festival Gallery
The late Laguna Beach photographer Stillman Sawyer donated a record $1 million to the Festival of Arts toward the building of a permanent, yearround exhibition space. Board president Wayne Baglin this week said the festival will soon start addressing issues that have stalled Sawyer's bequest, made last year. Full Story

Turning a Lens on Surf Culture
Documentary film "Under the Sun," explores the commercialization of surfing subcultures in Australia's Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, and will screen at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at Laguna Beach's South Coast Cinema. Juxtapoz Artists Visit for Museum Book Signing
As part of the current exhibition, "In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor," artists Chris Mars and Jeff Soto will visit the Laguna Art Museum Sept. 14 from 3 - 6 p.m. signing their new books. Bluegrass Fusion Tunes Up on the Fairway
A partnership between Laguna Beach Live! and Aliso Creek Inn & Golf Course is bringing the music of Bearfoot Bluegrass, a fast rising, young acoustic band based out of Anchorage, Alaska, to Laguna Beach on Sept. 7. Taylor Pitz of Laguna Beach was selected to be on the 2009 PacSun USA Surf Team after competing in the SIMA Surfing America USA championships in Huntington Beach. Pitz competed in the girls under 18 and under 16 divisions in the six-day event. Full Story
