Missing the "poetry"
Editor: I picked up this week's Indy, settled in and read through the facts and info about our town, skipped the article about paper cuts and saved the poetry for last, as it enhanced my day. I went through the paper several times looking for Susan Velasquez' Unleash and Lauren Meggison's Star Talk page and Haleh's music. Full Story
Protesting an increase to water service charge
Ed. Note: This was sent to the Laguna Beach County Water District I would like to submit a written protest against the amount of the proposed service charge increase. Here is my perspective: I obtained a 2" meter for my new home in 2003. The service charge was approximately $60. Then, in 2005, the service charge was increased by $40 to $100, a 67 percent increase. Stakes come down and a political sign goes up
Editor: Like many in Laguna Beach, my dream was to own an ocean view home. I achieved this dream about eight years ago. Now, my dream is being taken away because of commercialization. This was my first experience with the City Council and Planning Commission in regards to opposing building in Laguna. The project is mixed-use at 1369 North Coast Highway. Full Story
Kinsman is a doer, not a talker
Editor: Some people talk a good game, while others take action. A vote for Cheryl Kinsman for Laguna Beach City Council is a vote for action, as her record proves. Full Story
Lightening up a little?
Editor: What's up with Kelly Boyd? According to Kelly [letter 10/10], former Mayor Charlton Boyd can't have an ad in the paper on the same day that Kelly does because he has the same last name, and it might confuse the voters. Full Story
Some Democratic friends of his…
Editor: Former Mayor Charlie Boyd writes in the Laguna Beach Independent his support for Verna Rollinger and Jane Egly for city council. Talk about being full of oneself, Kelly Boyd takes offense accusing former Mayor Charlie Boyd of committing a political dirty trick. Isn't Boyd a very common name? Full Story
Kinsman needs to do something about SoLag beach stairways
Editor: Councilperson and candidate Cheryl Kinsman is a resident of South Laguna and has done nothing, to the delight of many coastal residents, to make certain Camel Point Drive is clearly posted as a public walking access way to the beach and nothing to make improvements on the six stairways to the beach in South Laguna including two bad ones at 31321 and 31351 South Full Story
Political claims
Editor: "I'm proud I've helped our city by sponsoring the Mayor's Climate Protection Act in Laguna Beach." This bold statement, misleading in the extreme, appears on Cheryl Kinsman's ballot statement. My dictionary defines a sponsor as "a person or organization that pays for or plans and carries out a project or activity." Ms. Kinsman did none of these things. Full Story
A note to Village Laguna
Editor: Village Laguna members can stop trying to make a case for Verna Rollinger being better qualified because she held a government clerk's job for years and her "inside" experience is superior to the two incumbents' private sector business experience. Her marginal high school diploma does not provide her with analytical financial ability superior to CPA Cheryl Kinsman. Full Story
Mendacity is in the eye the beholder
Editor: Whether it's a letter to the editor or a letter from my congressman, mendacity offends me. Gene Felder's submission in the last issue is a case in point. Full Story
Political signs go missing
Editor: What does it say about the loss of our "village" when a new day brings the loss of an "Obama for President" sign from my front yard? Does it bring an honest appraisal of what may be an imaginary sense of security? What's next? Getting serious about locking our doors at night? Full Story
Ministers and same-sex marriages
Editor: Isn't it a sin to lie? I am very disappointed by the new ads that have come out for YES on 8 and the lies embedded in their message. In the latest issue of Church Law & Tax Report it clearly states that in response to the question, "Are Ministers Required to Perform Same- Sex Marriages? Full Story
Yes on Prop 8
Editor: I believe in human rights. I believe in civil liberty. I believe that no government or law of man has the right to compel anyone or any entity to perform any act or service contrary to his own beliefs as long as his beliefs does not constitute harm to others. Full Story
Palin will be an asset to the future of our country
Editor: Those who think vicepresidential candidate Sarah Palin is an empty-headed ninny, should read her speech in the September, 2008 "Imprimis" monthly from Hillsdale College. As Alaska's governor, she says Alaska can and must be part of the answer to America's need for natural gas, oil, renewable, and alternative sources of energy. Full Story
"By 2012 we will know our future."
Editor: The flow of history has cut a new and unexpected channel and a new historical course has been carved out. For months and months and months I have been telling all my friends that the election for President of the United States is rigged and John McCain will be elected the next President. Full Story
Hmmmm…
Editor: Capitalism has failed and we have to employ Socialism to bail it out. Go figure. Niko Theris Laguna Beach Full Story
Panic will get us nowhere
Editor: Crash! Bang! These are terrible financial times. Most people are worried about their financial futures, and rightly so. There is a general lack of confidence in our government and our financial institutions. We have a lame duck president whose public approval rating is lower than low, and there is a vacuum in world leadership. Full Story
A mortgage plan
Editor: Why doesn't the government try this? Instead of buying up mortgages, why not just subsidize the payments temporarily? The easy way example: Mortgage balance= $400,000 Monthly payment= $2528. Homeowner pays- $1528. Full Story
Correction:
Due to a reporting error, an article in the Oct. 10 edition mistakenly reported that La Vida Laguna kayaking company was awarded a temporary use permit by the City Council. On Oct. Full Story
