Spirited Frosh-Soph Team Loses in San Diego
By DMITRY KRADER Special to the Independent

The Laguna Beach High School frosh-soph football squad has a record of 4-2 after a tough loss to St. Francis of San Diego last Friday. Penalties against the Breakers coupled with a tough defense by St. Francis held the Laguna team to 13 points. In the previous two games, the Breakersí offense scored a total of 98 points. Michael Hyden was forced to punt the ball on fourth down several times, kicking punts of 68, 52 and 47 yards.

Highlights for Laguna were excellent defensive plays by Taylor Preston, Skyler Wood, Jed Christensen and Tyler Pierce, who all made unassisted tackles to stop San Diego from further scoring. The Breakers first score came on their first possession in the second half, a 71-yard run by quarterback Derek Reigel. After the touchdown, the team was penalized for excessive celebration, but was able to convert the extra point from the 35-yard line. The Breakersí second touchdown was set up by an interception by Taylor Preston, who ran the ball back to the St. Francis 34 yard-line. During the first offensive play, Zack Stephenson took the hand off and ran the ball 34 yards into the end zone.

Although the team lost with a score of 21-13, Coach Jonathan Todd and his staff believe the team is in contention for the league championship.
