Eliseo Hernandez

Long-time Laguna Beach resident Eliseo Hernandez passed away Thursday, Oct. 23, due to complications of brain surgery.

Hernandez was born Feb. 25, 1937, in Chihuahua, Mexico, and had a career in the travel industry, working for various airline companies, including Air California and American Airlines. He also worked for the past 16 years at Junka Bear Illustrations for artist Dennis Junka at the Sawdust Art Festival.

Besides being active on the city's HIV Advisory Committee, Hernandez volunteered for the Laguna Beach Community Clinic, No Square Theater, Laguna Live, Gallimaufry Theater, Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce, Laguna Shanti, ASF, AIDS Services Foundation, Shanti of Orange County and many other organizations.

"I am devastated by the loss of this dedicated clinic supporter," said Dr. Tom Bent of the Laguna Beach Community Clinic. "He was a consummate 'welcoming committee' at our clinic events. His friendly demeanor and social skills made people glad they came."

Long-time friend Junka said, "Many in Laguna will miss his help and his good humor. I certainly will."

No Square Theater will dedicate this year's production of "Lagunatics" to Hernandez, a favorite house manager.

Hernandez's family hosted an impromptu gathering at Heisler Park last Thursday afternoon, Oct. 23. A memorial celebration will be held at 4 p.m. at Heisler Park, near the foot of Myrtle Street, on Thursday, Nov. 6.
