The 28th season of LBHS girls soccer began successfully this past week, demonstrating a strong defense that allowed just one goal in five games. The efforts were good for two wins and three ties. Laguna started the week with a pair of 0-0 ties, first against Connelly in the Ocean View Holiday Tournament and the other coming in a non-league match at San Juan Hills.

The Ocean View Tourney resumed play last Saturday and the Breakers beat Saddleback 4-0 on two goals by Alex Degarmo and one each from Samantha Kafer and Jenny Maddocks. In the Saturday afternoon match, Laguna defeated Oxford Academy 1-0 on a goal by Kelsey Rustigian.

Laguna and University played to a classic 1-1 tie this Tuesday as the Breakers moved to a 2-0-3 record. The hard fought game provided end-to-end competition with both teams having opportunities to achieve a win.

Laguna's stalwart defense, led by senior Holden Penney, turned away repeated attacks from the quick University forwards. LBHS keeper Lura Hills had 12 saves on the night and played bravely several times streaking out to the 18-yard line. The scoring came in the first half with a nicely placed shot off the far post by senior forward Erica Hawkins. Kelsey Peterson and Madeline Arterburn assisted.

Rustigian, a sophomore, ninth grader Marina Paul and Degarmo, a junior, battled hard through the midfield to keep University in check. The Trojans evened he score at 1-1 just before halftime. The second half was played across the full pitch as both teams tried to create opportunities. The midfield play was intense with both teams battling for control of the match.

Laguna plays Tustin on Saturday as part the Ocean View Tournament and hosts Pacifica on Tuesday in a non-league match-up. Should Laguna defeat Tustin, Laguna should be in the final four for the Tournament title with the playoffs scheduled for Monday at Ocean View.
