Town to Tout its Heritage in May

The Laguna Beach Heritage Committee has planned numerous events to help residents celebrate Heritage Month in Laguna during May. It's a great opportunity to get to know our fair city a little more intimately before the summer crowds take over.

Heritage tours through May 31. Ride the bus and tour historic neighborhoods in North and South Laguna with the help of the "Heritage Walking Companion Self-Guided Tour" brochure, which is available on city buses and at City Hall.

Historical Society visits - weekends from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Stop in at the Historical Society's Murphy-Smith House, 278 Ocean Avenue. This fineexample of an early Laguna Beach cottage was built in 1920 in the Builder Bungalow style.

Guided walks of historical downtown Laguna - 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 10. Stroll through historic downtown Laguna with Heritage Committee members. Meet guides Rick Gold and Anne Frank in front of the Laguna Beach Library, 363 Glenneyre Street. No charge.

Guided walk through Crystal Cove Historic District - 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 10. Step back in time as you experience this wonderful example of an early California beach settlement. Meet at Los Trancos parking lot on the inland side of Coast Highway, one mile north of El Morro School. There is no charge for the tour and a $10 parking fee. Call 497-7647 for more information.

Natural history hike in the Laguna wilderness - 9 a.m. to noon, Saturdays May 17 and 24. Take a guided 3.5-mile moderate hike through Laurel Canyon to Bommer Ridge and down to Willow Canyon and see what Laguna was like before development. Wear sturdy shoes, sunscreen and a hat and bring water. Space is limited and a $2 donation is requested for the hike. The parking fee is $3. Call 923-2235 for information and reservations.

The Train Robber's Daughter" Historical Society talk - 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday, June 2. Jay O'Connell, author of "The Train Robber's Daughter," will talk about Eva Evans, the daughter of a famous train robber in the San Joaquin Valley who settled in Laguna Beach. The talk will be held in Conference Room A at City Hall. There is no charge and refreshments will be provided.
