A unique community with unique values
Editor: Thank you Fred Droz [letter 1-9-09], and to those that worked so very hard on the Vision Laguna 2030 Project to incorporate those values that have made Laguna Beach such a desirable place to live and visit into your final report. You have given us a road map to guide our city into the future. Full Story
The city didn't pay the $15 million
Editor: In last issue of The Independent, Ms Cindalee Penny-Hall stated rights of the homeless. I strongly disagree that the city paid $15 million for the new senior center. It should be noted that many of our local businesses and residents contributed to this project. Full Story
What we need is for the City to act

Know your trees
Editor: There is much misinformation in the letter from Jennifer Horsman [1/9/09]. The ficus trees in town need lacing every 3-4 years, root planing, etc. They are not the most appropriate street tree, as the roots are invasive to plumbing causing expensive pipe cleaning and, or, replacement of the sewer pipes. Editor: The City Council's 1/6/09 agenda appointed a committee to consider how the City can assist local business during the current national recession. Kalos Kagathos Foundation, a 55-year resident of Laguna Beach, asks the committee to consider the 100-year image of Laguna Beach, an internationally acclaimed artist colony. Full Story
In the news…

Kansas tourist and Irvine letter writer
Editor: I am writing this letter because I am disturbed to hear on the local news that a "Kansas tourist" beat a bird because the bird was going after his ice cream. That is probably the most idiotic thing I have heard in a longtime. Full Story
Global warming and China's coal production
Editor: Proponents of the Kyoto Treaty seem to support an effective "white guilt" treaty; however it will do nothing to stop the increase in greenhouse gases. Critics at the earliest meetings insisted that if serious developing countries would have to be included. Full Story
