Questions about the new Community/ Senior Center
Editor: Now that the Community Center is built, and I took my first class at the center last week, I have questions to the City Council, Planning Commission and Design Review Board that built this new structure. • Where are the bike racks? I rode my bike and was shocked to find no place at this community center to park my bike. Full Story
Pearson thanked for her integrity
Editor: Thanks to Elizabeth Pearson for standing up for what she thought was in the best interest of her city, Laguna Beach, when she supported the temporary sales tax to repair the Bluebird Canyon slide damage. Full Story
The tall efforts to stop more permanent lifeguard towers
Editor: We beat City Hall! The old expression, "You can't fight City Hall", well... we did and we won! It was very time consuming, expensive, and difficult, but we did it. The City has every resource at their disposal (attorneys, consultants, engineers, money, etc.) and we did it! Full Story
"Outhouse on a stick"
Editor: Last Friday, it was my honor and pleasure, in company with several other concerned Laguna folks, to appear before a hearing with the California Coastal Commission (CCC), which dealt with the installation of several permanent lifeguard towers at local Laguna beaches. Full Story
There's more to it than just the smell
Editor: With regard to Chris Farley's letter last week "Laguna hasn't always been so stinky", I hate to mention it, but the methane he is blaming for the smell is in fact odorless. It's also not toxic, except that in high concentrations it will displace oxygen, causing asphyxia. It is flammable, but only in a relatively narrow range of mixtures with air. Full Story
SUPER Project is a once in a lifetime opportunity for LB
Editor: The horse is out of the gate! For several years, the County, the Corps of Engineers and the EPA have worked on a viable plan (the Aliso Creek Super Project) to remove non-native vegetation, Full Story
Does Laguna antagonize its citizens?
Editor: I try to shop in downtown Laguna, I really do. But then there was the time I fed the wrong meter, and got a ticket. My fault, shoulda paid attention, so ok. Then there was the time I got a ticket for backing into the slot. What?! I drove in straight! Full Story
Law enforcement
Editor: As I was driving down Laguna Canyon near Ganahl's last week, I noticed that traffic had slowed down to make room for a Laguna Police Officer. The officer had pulled over a young lady (probably on her way to work) for a violation like speeding or possibly a missing front license plate. Full Story
A community with some distorted views
Editor: On Dec 26 in Costa Mesa someone shot repeatedly a paintball gun at a homeless man who was seriously injured in the attack. Last fall in LA a homeless man was set on fire. If not for these incidents, I'd have ignored Mr. Wolf and Mr. Kerr's letters against the homeless and those who help them [2/6]. Full Story
New homeless math
Editor: RE: "Homeless Math," Indy letters Jan 30: Letter writer Otis Healy's confusion about how many homeless people there are in Laguna is easily cleared up, unlike the problem of homelessness itself. Mr. Healy wrote that the figures in Kristy Melita's letter penciled out to 47 people, and mine to 27. I appreciate his earnest desire to know the correct figures. Full Story
Would LB become a homeless magnet for providing services?
Editor: We hear a recurring concern about the homeless from some members of the community and city officials. It is the fear that providing services and a place to sleep could draw large numbers of additional homeless people to Laguna Beach. The number has remained quite stable over several years, according to the annual countywide count and our chief of police. Full Story
This and that
Editor: I was just plain stunned by the hate-filled and ignorant letter concerning the homeless in last week's Indy by Mr. Wolf. Mace needs some seeerious love. 200 out of 20,000? Let's take a vote! Full Story
Business license fees
Editor: It was interesting reading the article titled "Local Stimulus Ideas" [Indy 1/30] and noting that nothing was put forth how the City was prepared to relook internally at its processes and see whether they could cut costs to businesses starting or relocating in Laguna Beach. Full Story
