Working Up a Sweat for Kenya's Children
Laguna Beach's Art of Fitness will sponsor the inaugural Cardio for Kenya charitable fitness event, Saturday, May 9, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. where members and non-members of the gym are encouraged to join their neighbors for a "worthwhile" workout or just coffee. Art of Fitness staff and fitness trainers will also volunteer their time at the event. Full Story
Banquet Honors Laguna's Finest
The Laguna Beach Exchange Club will host the annual Police Awards Banquet at 9 a.m. next Thursday, May 14, to honor police department employees for their acts of bravery, lifesaving and meritorious service. Hard Work Yields Cultural and Spiritual Dividends
A group of 35 Laguna Presbyterian Church volunteers, comprised of junior high and high school students, along with chaperones and church leaders, recently returned from the 10th annual mission trip to the Hawaiian island of Molokai. The impoverished community there suffers from a high unemployment rate and nearly 80 percent of the residents are on welfare. Full Story

PR Guru Procures Teaching Post Laguna Beach resident Joan Gladstone, president of crisis communications firm Gladstone International, has been named assistant professor of public relations and advertising at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. She will begin the fulltime teaching assignment in September. Full Story

Birthday in the Park
Boys & Girls Club celebrates TLC's birthday with a pancake breakfast in Bluebird Park. Mother and daughter Krista and Maija Shaw joined in, along with TLC staff and students Bryce Campanelli and Kyle Shaw. Over 125 guests were served while TLC staff painted faces, kids bounced in a jumper, children blew bubbles and others danced to music. Board members also participated, including Tom Kennedy, who sponsored the breakfast and flipped the cakes. Full Story

Inertia could kill you. That's right. Doing nothing can actually take your life, according to Dr. Lynn Stanton, committee chairman of the Laguna Readiness Committee. The committee, which operates under the auspices of the Laguna Relief and Resource Center, was devised to help residents prepare for the next disaster with a plan no more complicated than a recipe. Compost Giveaway Returns Garden Trimmings
Laguna Beach residents can help themselves to free compost from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 9, at the Act V Lot located at 1900 Laguna Canyon Road. The compost is an organic soil amendment that consists of composted, recycled green waste collected as part of the city's residential recycling program. Full Story
