Local Author's Tidepool Book Is a Swimming Success
Laguna Ocean Foundation is proud to announce that the book "See into the Sea," written by local resident and Laguna Ocean Foundation board member Molly Peckels has been named winner in the comics/graphic novels category by the 2009 Green Book Festival, which honors books that contribute to greater understanding, respect and positive action on the changing worldwide environment.
The book, which is illustrated by Svett Strickland, is an educational coloring book inspired by Peckels' experiences as a tidewater docent for the Laguna Ocean Foundation, of which she is now a board member. As a docent she saw that most damage was a result of ignorance, and decided to help sensitize the public by starting with the children. "Winning this award is so exciting for Svet and me," said Peckels. "We thought there was a need and 'See into the Sea' just evolved. We tried to make it fun because I have found that when kids have fun, the learning just happens."
The book educates children in good tidepool behavior, sea critter identification and environmental responsibility. It has 16 pages of illustrations to color, and reveals information and fun facts about the sea creatures represented. Each image also includes a hidden piece of trash for the kids to find. Two versions of the book were published; the junior kids.
Laguna Ocean Foundation has incorporated "See into the Sea" in its programs and the city of Laguna Beach also distributes the first edition in support of their tidepool education program.
"See into the Sea" is available at Laguna Beach bookstores and the gift store at Crystal Cove.
