Laguna Beach's City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to request that the California Department of Fish and Game give Laguna the highest possible level of marine protection, barring fishing of any kind in Laguna's coastal waters by declaring the city's entire seven-mile coastline a State Marine Reserve. Surf Claims Cliff Jumper Despite Rescue Effort
The apparent drowning death of a 22-year-old Lake Forest man, the focus of an intensive rescue effort Sunday at Tablerock Beach, is under investigation by the county coroner, police said Thursday. William Barrientos-Burgos was last heard pleading for help in Spanish before the rough surf pulled him under at Tablerock Beach, an eyewitness told police. Full Story

As of July 6, picnickers wishing to wash down their al fresco meals with a little wine or beer at Heisler, Main Beach or Crescent Bay Point parks will need a $10 permit for the pleasure, thanks to an ordinance adopted as an urgency measure by the City Council at Tuesday's meeting. Full Story

Student Quinn Harmon and civic gadfly Bruce Hopping intend to request that the official mascot of Laguna Beach High School be restored to the Artists, the name it carried from it's inception in 1934 to 2002, during the next school board meeting on June 23.
