Cliff Jumpers Ignored Warnings
Editor, As a longtime resident in Laguna Beach and former State lifeguard I've witnessed far too many reckless accidents along the rocky shores and cliffs in south Laguna. The drowning of the 22-year-old man on Sunday was precipitated by avoidable causes. It is a shame that this man died, particularly when you consider the circumstances. Full Story
Praise for Rescuers
Editor, I am writing this letter after first-hand witnessing the brave efforts of Laguna Beach fire, police and lifeguards in their efforts to rescue a young man who dove off the Tablerock ledge this evening. I live on Circle Drive and heard the rotor blades of a search helicopter on the beach as I was taking my evening walk. Full Story
Spare the Ocean, Use Elbow Grease
Editor, Professional gardeners blow grass clippings (or worse) up or down the street (in a cloud of air polluting dust) or else they hose the stuff into the street, wasting precious water and ultimately polluting our ocean. Laguna Beach has had a city ordinance banning the use of noisy, air polluting, leaf blowers for many years. The leaf blower ordinance is a joke. Full Story
Alarmist Conclusions Over Dispensaries
Editor, We cannot agree with Mr. Elghanayan (Opinion, "Pipe Dreams," June 12) He paints a picture of needing to tightly control the sale of marijuana in Laguna Beach, lest the wild west break. He does not cite, but appears to allude to, the fallacy of marijuana being a gateway drug, that will lead to chronic usage of much more dangerous drugs such as cocaine and heroine. Full Story
Music Woman Plays a Final Note
Editor, Please allow me space for a big thank you to the Woman's Club who honored me this month and to all the other many amazing community people and friends who made it such a memorable occasion for me and my family. It is wonderful to have my efforts recognized and I, in turn, want to express my appreciation for all of those who have worked right along side of me. Full Story
Rebuilding in Bluebird Canyon
Editor, Four years ago, June 1, 2005, our lives changed dramatically as Flamingo Road and the hillside above our Bluebird Canyon home of 21 years came tumbling down to destroy our home and picturesque canyon. Through the years, we have had many people come to our assistance in the neighborhood, including our friends, city staff, our architect, engineers and designers. Full Story
A Shelter With a Twist
Editor, I, like you, as part of our Laguna Beach community, am concerned about the homeless people not only in our town but also in our nation. Yet as the saying goes, "think globally but act locally." So here is my two cents worth for your consideration. Full Story
Homeless Can Defy Stereotypes
Editor, For quite some time now, the plight of the homeless in Laguna Beach has been a hot issue. It occurred to me that everyone has rights, but they also have responsibilities. Tourists provide the community with substantial revenue, nevertheless they do litter and can disrespect Laguna's coastline. Full Story
Gratitude for Budget Heroics
Editor, What Ken Frank and the City Council did tonight was heroic. They took a very difficult situation and made it as painless as possible and more importantly Ken Frank planned for the dark days ahead. As president of Taxpayers and Friends of the Library, thank you. Full Story
