Robert Stanley Shomaker
Robert Stanley Shomaker, known as Bob and husband of Dr. Joyce Johnson, died on June 10 due to leukemia.
Shomaker was born in South Dakota, but lived most of his life in Colorado, Texas, Hawaii, and California. His most important childhood events were playing guitar and becoming a Christian.
At age 18, the Army discovered he had tuberculosis and discharged him to a sanatorium in Kansas. An easel was set up over his bed and while there, he became known for his paintings of Jesus. Shomaker was not expected to survive. But he went on to earn a college music degree, taught guitar and worked in executive posts for both Fender and Yamaha.
He was married for 45 years to Mary Kay. After her death, through the Internet he met his most recent wife, Joyce Johnson, a 15-year Laguna Beach resident. They were married for seven years, a time when he battled several illnesses.
Unknown to most, Shomaker was a pool shark often referred to as "Minnesota Thin." His favorite hobbies were painting, playing steel guitar, watching Tiger Woods' tournaments, and traveling.
Spiritual matters were an important force in his life. He never missed a day of church.
A week before his death, Shomaker was trying to strengthen himself in the gym, worked in the office and teaching guitar to his wife's grandson.
A memorial service was held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church on June 27.
