DUI Checkpoint Results in Six Arrests
Nearly 2,000 vehicles passed through a Laguna Beach police checkpoint on Friday, Aug. 28, resulting in the arrest of six people for suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol, police reported.
Of the 485 southbound drivers who were stopped between the hours of 9 p.m. and 2:15 a.m. on Coast Highway at Three Arch Bay, 15 were given field sobriety tests and a dozen's driving status was checked. Of the latter, four of those individuals were found be unlicensed or driving on a restricted license.
In all, six vehicles were towed from the checkpoint.
Last weekend was the third checkpoint conducted this year in partnership with police and the state Department of Alcohol Beverage Control.
DUIs
Christopher Rodriguez, 54, of Boca Raton, Fla., was arrested Friday, Aug. 28 for suspicion of DUI and held for $10,000 bail because of a prior conviction.
A 31-year-old Corona del Mar woman was arrested for DUI about 12:28 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, near Emerald Bay.
A 53-year-old Laguna Beach man was arrested for DUI about 7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 28, on Laguna Canyon Road.
John Wesley Calhoun, 38, of Dana Point was arrested for suspi- cion of DUI in the 1300 block of Glenneyre at 5:38 p.m. Aug. 30. He was held for $15,000 bail due to two prior convictions.
Tuesday, Aug. 25
Trespassing. 600 Fontana Way. 8:40 a.m. An electrician sent to work at an unoccupied home found an 18-year-old male inside.
Suspicious. 500 block Anita Street. 12:26 p.m. A "creepy looking" man in a dark car with the windows rolled up looks similar to one who followed a resident home earlier.
Wildlife. Baja and Capistrano streets. 3:22 p.m. A possible mountain lion sighting.
Theft. 500 block of Ruby Street. A resident believes movers stole a diamond ring valued at $15,000.
Fraud. 31000 block of Brooks Street. 6 p.m. Someone who stole credit cards from an unlocked car made $800 worth of purchases at Walmart.
Suspicious. 1400 block of Coast Highway. 11:23 p.m. A café patron reported being approached by a seller of crystal meth.
Wednesday, Aug. 26
Reckless Driving. Legion Street and Coast Highway. 10:53 a.m. Three older men in spandex on racing bikes are cutting drivers off and failing to stop at lights.
Patrol. Aliso Parking lot. 2:20 p.m. Orange resident Anthony Herrera, 43, was arrested for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, a small amount of methamphetamine, and held for $20,000 bail, after a patrol officer who questioned him believed he was under the influence of drugs.
Thursday, Aug. 27
Mischief. 1800 block Ocean Way. 2 p.m. Three kids launching water balloons are hitting people on the beach and ruining cell phones.
Traffic stop. Coast and Aliso Circle. 3:47 p.m. Krista Davidson, 27, of Laguna Beach was arrested for allegedly possessing a controlled substance, a medication without a prescription. She was held for $20,000 bail.
Friday, Aug. 28
Wildlife. 100 block of Ruby Street. 5:55 p.m. A green iguana taking a dip in a pond was gone on arrival.
Saturday, Aug. 29
Suspicious. Temple Hills and Thalia Street. 12:43 a.m. A resident reported hearing footsteps and observed people running out of unoccupied houses nearby.
Sunday, Aug. 30
Traffic collision. Laguna Canyon Road. 2 a.m. The injured driver of a Ford pickup who smashed into an Edison pole told witnesses he was a parolee who didn't want to return to jail and fled, refusing their aid. The road was reopened at 6:30 a.m.
Theft. 200 block Broadway. 11:22 a.m. Two young men shoplifted two bottles of cough medicine.
Home Burglars Net $1 Million
Nearly $1 million in diamond jewelry and other valuables were stolen from an oceanfront home in the 32000 block of Coast Highway where burglars forced entry through a door sometime during the weekend, police Lt. Jason Kravetz said.
The residents returned after a four-day absence and reported the loss on Sunday after finding the back door open and a safe entered, the police log said.
Detectives are investigating, Kravetz said.
