My Hero Project Campaigns for Votes
The Laguna Beach-based My Hero Project is in the running for a $10,000 grant from Cox Communication. Each year the organization honors 10 outstanding non-profit organizations that benefit the community. A public vote decides which wins the $10,000 grant, and the other nine finalists each receive $5,000. Full Story

Pet Owners and Chili Chefs to Strut Their Stuff
Pets and chili cooks will compete Sept. 13 for bragging rights at the Laguna Board of Realtors' 13th annual chili cook-off and pet parade, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Tivoli Too grounds on Laguna Canyon Road. Aspiring and professional chili chefs are being invited to submit recipes and samples of their fiery concoctions for review by local judges. Full Story

Applications due for City Committees
The City Council is now accepting applications from residents interested in sitting on the city's personnel board, environmental and housing committees. The personnel board hears appeals over disciplinary action, dismissal, demotion, reduction in pay, or suspension, and it consists of three members who serve two-year terms that begin on Oct. 1 in odd numbered years. Help Celebrate 'Red' Auerbach's 92nd Birthday
A special 92nd birthday party for Eugene (aka "Red") Auerbach will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Sept. 4, at Picayo Restaurant, located at N. Coast Highway and Boat Canyon. Auerbach, who received his doctorate from USC in 1957, has been a Laguna Beach resident for 40 years. Full Story
Garden Club Presentation Cultivates 'Year-Round Colors'
Ornamental horticulturist and landscape designer Annie Hall will give a presentation on "Year-Round Color" to the Laguna Beach Garden Club on Friday, Sept. 11, during their meeting at the Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann's Drive.
