Get Goofy With It

In a town with three times more hybrids per capita than any other city in the county, Transition Laguna is challenging locals to go even one better by turning out on bikes, and Halloween costumes.
TL, the local chapter of an international movement of towns helping their residents live a more sustainable lifestyle, invites Lagunans to don their wackiest Day of the Dead get-up and hop on their bike to join other merry pranksters in All Hallow’s Eve. The costumed bike parade will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Farmers’ Market parking lot on Forest Avenue and Broadway.
Be there, get goofy and continue the tradition of creative expression that is integral to the character of Laguna, said local Michael Hoag, organizer and bicycle enthusiast who is also known as Mr. Green Streets.
From there, he expects the eyepopping sight of bike-riders in full costume will wake up the town en masse as the group rides from the market and swarms through downtown via Forest Ocean, Laguna avenues and Mermaid Street and across Coast Highway to Main Beach and Cliff Drive.
“In Europe, riding bikes and walking is a loved way of life,” Hoag said. “Older cities, even Laguna Beach, weren’t built to glorify the car, like suburbia was. If we want less auto congestion, less noise, less fuel consumption and a healthier lifestyle, we don’t want to plan for more cars.”
