Street Beat

Streetbeat, Monday, Oct. 19-Sunday, Oct. 25
By Andrea Adelson

Information in Street Beat is compiled from publicly available logs of the Laguna Beach Police Department and often follow-up interviews.

The paper’s policy is to publish the names of those arrested depending on the seriousness of the allegation, if there are aggravating circumstances, such as prior offenses, and if the account is reasonably complete. Parents of school-age children enrolled in local schools who are arrested may request the omission of their name by email: editor@lbindy.com. The decision remains at the editor’s discretion.

Drowning Victim Smoked Pot

A 22-year-old Lake Forest man who drowned off Table Rock Beach during dangerous surf conditions on June 14 had been smoking marijuana, according to a coroner’s report.

William Barrientos-Burgos’ death was classified as an accident, but toxicology results indicated the presence of tetrahydrocannabinal carboxy acid, an indicator of marijuana usage, said a spokeswoman for the coroner’s department, which released the findings earlier in the month.

Preceding the drowning, witnesses described lifeguards repeatedly cautioning divers off the cliffs, which are posted with warning and “no trespassing” signs. At the time of the incident, a witness who reported a swimmer in distress had seen Barrientos-Burgos jump from the rocky ledge.

Despite an extensive rescue effort, his body was discovered the following day in a neighboring cove by teens.
