A film about the inspirational hometown hero Skipper Carrillo made by student filmmakers John Barrett, Aaron Fong and Austin Dodge won for best high school film at the fifth annual My Hero film festival, which took place at USC this past Saturday.

Boys Capture First Ever CIF Crown
Last Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, four Laguna seniors and a junior authored a new chapter in the storied history of their school’s cross-country program, leaving their mark on the CIF record books and defeating their long-time nemesis Big Bear by a mind-boggling 68 points, 27 to 95. Girls Take Sixth at CIF Finals, Return to State
Senior McKenna Nokes led the Laguna Beach girls’ cross country team to a sixth place finish at CIF finals on Nov. 21 at Mt. SAC in Walnut. The team returns to state finals in Fresno by virtue of finishing in the top seven. Full Story

Program Fosters ‘Creative’ Competition
This fall, more than 200 students from Laguna Beach schools participated in the Reflections Program, the National PTA’s arts recognition and achievement program in literature, visual arts, photography, dance choreography, musical composition, and film production. Student works were critiqued against others in the same grade division. Full Story

Oilers End Season 10-5
Boys water polo’s 46th season concluded in the Southern Section Division III playoffs last Wednesday, Nov. 18 as Montebello defeated Laguna 10-5 the defensive semifinal match played at Mt San Antonio College. Breakers held a 2-1 lead late in the first quarter before the defending champions fired four quick goals over a span three minutes to seize control the match. Full Story
Beckman Ends Laguna’s Post Season, 35-28
Laguna ran out of miracle plays last Friday as their final drive into Beckman territory got as deep as the 31 yard line before they turned the ball over late in the fourth quarter. That allowed the favored Patriots to escape with the win in a first round play- off game played at Guyer Field. Full Story
Pitz Crowned League Champ
Laguna Beach High School junior Taylor Pitz won the girl’s shortboard division when the LBHS Surf Team finished their season by competing in the South Coast League Finals at Upper Trestles on Nov. 17 and 18. LBHS competed against Newport Harbor, San Clemente and Dana Hills high schools. Full Story
Ex Pro Starts Youth Baseball Travel Team
Former Angel Bobby Grich will assemble and manage a traveling youth baseball team called the Orange County Angels, to be made up of 12 to 15 of the area’s top young players, and is currently soliciting applications from players 13 and under. Full Story
Early Intervention Improves Performance in Laguna Schools
Response to Instruction and Intervention (RtI2), an early intervention program of the school district, has resulted in three straight years of increased student performance as measured by state and national tests. Full Story
Diving for Gold
Local diver Mackenzie Peasley, center, brought home two gold medals at the 2009 Glenn McCormick Memorial Diving Invitational in Long Beach Nov. 13-15. In the nine and under division, she placed first on the five- and one-meter platform events; and in the 11 and under three-meter she placed fourth. Her cumulative score qualifies Mackenzie to compete at national championship. Full Story
Lightning Lollipops Earn AYSO Crown
The Lightning Lollipops were crowned AYSO’s girls under 10 soccer champions this past Saturday, Nov. 21.
The girls were heavy underdogs against the undefeated Killer Blues. Having played the team three times during the regular season and play-offs, the Lollipops stunned the Killer Blues with team work. Full Story
Thurston’s Sports Swap Declares a Winner
Thurston Middle School held their first “Sports Swap Sale” on Nov. 14 in the school’s gym, starting a new tradition. The sale featured new and gently used sports equipment brought in by families in the Laguna Beach School District, with 60 percent of the proceeds going back to the consignee and 40 percent going to the Thurston PTA.
